ACTIVITIES ON SITE AT CASITAS TENORIO

Morning farm tour
A short walk from your casita will bring you to our cow barn. It is here that we milk our cows twice daily. You are welcome to learn to milk a cow and help us! Watch or participate in our cheese-making activities. Be sure to “harvest” a few eggs while you are here and check out our special plants. Complimentary for guests

Tenorio Trial
Explore our property on our private trail where you will pass through remnant rainforest and visit a lookout with a spectacular view of both Miravalles Volcano and Tenorio Volcano. It is common to see monkeys and sloths in the trees. Complimentary for guests

Birdwatching
Casitas Tenorio is a paradise for birdwatchers and we have spotted over hundreds of species on our property and more in our area. There are showy birds such as toucans and oropendolas and tiny hummingbird jewels and everything in between. For more information, check our Birdwatching page.

Towel Art Classes
Learn to fold towels into works of art! Support ur local staff and take a lesson in town art. Available on request at Casitas Tenorio.

Traditional Cooking Classes
We can also arrange a local cooking class, Spanish lessons, a game of soccer with the locals or a private guide. Please contact us directly for options.

Massage

ACTIVITIES IN THE LOCAL BIJAGUA AREA

Tapir Valley Nature Reserve
Tapir Valley Nature Reserve is near the Tenorio National Park. It has primary rainforest and wetland and is a nature-lover’s paradise. The bird life is amazing with both forest birds and birds of the wetlands and true to the name, elusive tapirs are sometimes spotted.

Hanging Bridges at Heliconias Lodge
Heliconias Lodge is an small ecolodge located in a rainforest adjacent to the Tenorio National Park and about 800 meters from Casitas Tenorio. Their trail winds through the rainforest and features 3 hanging bridges for spectacular views at canopy level.

Tio Miguel's Night Tour
Uncle Miguel has lived in Bijagua for many years and during that time, reforested his farm property to provide essential habitat for many species of frogs, reptiles and other animals. You will have an opportunity to see them in their natural environment and experience the wonders of the forest at night.

Bijagua Waterfall
Visit this family run lodge and explore their trail into the rainforest at the base of Miravalles volcano. You will pass through their gardens and then alongside a river through dense forest. Two river crossings are required to reach the waterfalls and the hike can be strenuous is parts.

Tubing on Rio Celeste
Enjoy a great ride down the beautiful, blue Rio Celeste. Ride in a tube across rapids and past gorgeous rainforest.

Chocolate Farm Tour
Explore this family run chocolate farm. You will be shown the full process on how to make chocolate from tree to bar.

Horseback Riding
You can discover the local area via horseback. Tours can be tailored to your interests and riding ability.
ACTIVITIES BEYOND THE LOCAL AREA AND DAY TRIPS

Rio Perdido
Rio Perdido is a hotel and activity center on Miravalles Volcano and offers a range of activity including thermal river, natural hot springs, hiking or biking trails, a canopy tour and a restaurant.

Floating
The float trip on the lower Tenorio River is a peaceful adventure. This two-hour trip winds through the forest of beautiful, old trees and flowering plants with many chances to see wildlife which will be pointed out to you by your guide. Includes lunch.

Palo Verde
This wetland (formed by Tempisque River) provides a habitat for a plethora of bird and plant species and is home to many species of migratory birds and is a breeding ground of international importance and provides exceptional bird watching opportunity.

Llanos de Cortez
This waterfall is an incredible hidden treasure! It’s located about 4km off the Inter-Americana highway near the town of Bagaces. The entrance fee is a donation to the local school. There is a large car park and a short walk to the waterfall. It’s a great place to swim.

Caño Negro
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland of international significant about an 1.5hrs from Casitas Tenorio. It provides one of the best locations for bird watching in all of Costa Rica. This mixed reserve comprises permanent and intermittent lakes, forested wetlands and flooded areas.

Kayaking on Rio Frio
Two wetlands combine to create an incredible place of natural beauty. Explore the area by kayak. You’ll have the opportunity to see many species of plants and animals. There will be chance to see the Caño Blanco’s unique freshwater mangroves, a place with an impressive scenic beauty.

Rafting Rio Tenorio
The Rio Tenorio is a class III and IV river. It has many rapids and a class V 12ft drop. This is a great adventure activity and only about 30mins away from Casitas Tenorio.

Las Pumas Wildlife Refuge
This is a private non-profit animal refuge providing an incredible, up-close experience with big cats native to Costa Rica, including jaguars, pumas, margays and ocelots.

Maleku Community
Pip volunteered in Tonjibe, a small Maleku indigenous community over 17 years ago. She maintains her strong links with the community. Cultural tours available
