Amy’s Jam Project

Amy’s Jam Project: A Sweet Way to Make a Difference

We are honored to introduce you to Amy and her wonderful parents, Emily and Marvin.
Emily was one of Pip’s English students back in 2007, with a dream of becoming an English teacher. Through dedication and hard work, she became one of the first in her family to attend university, eventually graduating as an English teacher. She met Marvin in Bijagua, where he works full-time for the National Registry in Upala. They married, and in 2020, their beautiful daughter Amy was born.

Amy’s Story

Shortly after birth, Amy’s parents noticed she was missing key developmental milestones. Amy is paralyzed, suffers from frequent seizures, and has other medical challenges. Though she cannot walk or sustain her head, she communicates beautifully through her eyes and body language. Despite her difficulties, Amy is an intelligent, happy, and bright child.

Emily had to leave her job to care for Amy full-time, and without an official diagnosis, the family has not yet received government assistance. Amy requires frequent medical appointments in San José, Liberia, and Upala, where she sees specialists including a neurologist, pediatrician, speech therapist, and physiotherapist. Every trip is costly and stressful, requiring them to borrow a car, pay for fuel, and take time off work.

How the Jam Project Began

To help support her family, Emily and her mother made a batch of homemade pineapple and papaya jam for us to try. It was delicious! We loved it so much that we decided to serve it at breakfast here at Casitas Tenorio B&B. Our guests love the jam, and so do we!

Now, we offer Amy’s Jam in our gift shop, where every jar sold directly supports Amy’s medical care. Emily and Marvin also sell delicious fried chicken for dinner, available for delivery—ask us to see the menu!
