Bird enthusiasts will find Casitas Tenorio and the surrounding Bijagua region a paradise for birdwatching, with a diverse range of species frequenting our gardens and nearby rainforest.

For Casual Birdwatchers

If you’re new to neotropical birdlife, you’ll love spotting Toucans, Aracaris, Tanagers, and Honeycreepers—many of them brightly colored. These birds are frequent visitors to the Casitas Tenorio premises, especially in the mornings, when they come to feed on the fruit we provide.

For Experienced Birders

Bijagua is one of the best places to observe the elusive Tody Motmot and the rare Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo. While both species can be challenging to spot, the Ground-Cuckoo is particularly dependent on seasonal army ant swarms. These species are often found in primary rainforest about 800m from Casitas Tenorio.

Hummingbird Hotspot

For hummingbird lovers, our gardens and surrounding area provide opportunities to see some of the less common species, including the Snowcap, Purple-crowned Fairy, and both Starthroat species. The Black-crested Coquette is also a regular visitor, adding to the dazzling variety of hummingbirds in the region.

Spotting Rare Species

With its unique location between Volcano Tenorio and Volcano Miravalles, Casitas Tenorio is home to an abundance of birdlife, and there’s always a chance of spotting other rare and exciting species nearby.

Birdwatching at breakfast. Amazing. Beautiful birdwatching just at breakfast. Saw a sloth on arrival thanks to the kind staff. Waking up in the jungle was awesome! Wished we would have stayed longer. A hidden gem. Amazing value for the price!

Birding Paradise The sights and sounds of what Costa Rica is all about is right here! The rooms are clean and the bed is comfortable. When the Sun rises you will hear a variety of birds! From this lodge you can see toucans, howler monkeys, and sloths! You will be surrounded with beautiful flowers with hummingbirds and butterflies! They serve breakfast with fresh fruit and the eggs are from their chickens. After breakfast they offer a tour of the farm where you can milk a cow. Or you can walk about on the trails viewing the beautiful scenery. If you want rest and relaxation this is it!

A Birding Paradise I just absolutely love this place. Besides being one of the most beautiful of our stops in Costa Rica (we have spent 17 weeks vacationing here in the last 5 years) the owners of this small resort are outstanding hosts. The rooms are very comfortable and clean, with very nice porch rockers and a relaxing view. This B & B is an extension of a 17 acre working farm with animals and trails for your enjoyment. We photographed more beautiful birds here than anywhere in CR. Don't let the rough road (about 10 minute drive) getting to this place be a deterrent to your stay. You will not be sorry that you found this great place.

Great staff, great birding!!!! I have stayed at casitas tenorio several times and I have to say that every time I've stayed was even better. The grounds are beautiful, with many local species of plants and flowers, the casitas are super clean and they recently painted them with beautiful birds, forest, streams, waterfalls etc. The breakfast was delightful and the best of all is that you can birdwatch meanwhile you eat your breakfast because they have a bird feeder outside. Toucans, motmots, tanager, warblers, euphonias, oropendulas among many others are the birds that join you for breakfast. The staff is very friendly and always willing to help you find the best places and give you the best guidance and advise to make your visit unforgettable. I recommend casitas tenorio to anyone around Bijagua. Thank you my friends from Casitas and I'm hoping to see you soon.
