Words can’t express how amazing our stay at Casitas was! Pip and Donald (and their two beautiful girls) are the most gracious hosts. Their family and wonderful staff ensured that every detail of our stay was fabulous. The casitas are rustic and comfortable -the rain on the tin roof was so lovely. We loved watching dozens of butterflies dance around the trees in front of our casita (Volcano) each day. The farm tour is not to be missed -our children had a chance to milk cows and play with their guinea pigs, which was a huge hit. Jonathan also took us out for a personal tour on the hiking trail and found a group of howler monkeys and some sloths. Both of the Michelles and Laura at the front desk were also really fantastic and helped us get taxis, plan tours, and order pizza (make sure to go to Pizzeria Barrigon!) and the cleaning staff did a great job. Breakfast was delicious, especially with the exquisite birds that visit the lobby area during the meal. We could not have asked for a better trip to Bijagua, mostly thanks to the Casitas staff, who welcomed our family in a way that made us feel like we were part of the community for the week
My wife and I spent three nights in the Casitas Tenorio B&B while visiting the area during our recent trip to Costa Rica. This is one of the most beautiful and unique B&B’s that we have ever stayed at. The property is incredible and the people are really caring and special. Pip and Donald and their staff were helpful in so many ways from providing guidance with our hikes and itinery to ordering dinner from local restaurants. They served the most delicious, fresh breakfast every morning where we watched the most amazing tropical birds and animals up close. Be sure to do the farm tour and milk a cow with Jonathan one morning! We really appreciated our visit and to learn about the natural surroundings in the rain forest. Thank you Casitas Tenorio for this experience!
We were totally charmed by the whole experience we had in Casitas Tenorio B&B and farm. The place in itself is totally magnificent. The casitas are simple, yet comfortable and elegant. The beds are very comfortable. The bathroom is classy. In front of the casita, there is a little terrace with a breathtaking view on the unbelievable tropical gardens around and on the surrounding mountains (the Miravalles Volcano area). The breakfast is an unforgettable moment: homemade bread, homemade cheese, “homelaid” eggs, fresh juice… and a lively wildlife all around, including a banana loving toucan not 8m away. So both Bs of the B&B advertised deal are accounted for in a highly mastered way. But… over that, we were mostly seduced by the whole philosophy underlying the enterprise. We can feel the bond Pip and her husband share with their land, and their commitment to smart-sustainable farming, and this really moved us! The whole Tenorio-Miravalles region, moreover, is truly beautiful. The Tenorio National Park, and the trail to the Rio Celeste, is a must. Bijagua is a very easy going Tico Town. I cannot recommend Casitas Tenorio warmly enough!
A place we totally recommend, the casitas are beautiful and allow you to disconnect from the city, rest and live an experience with connection to nature; and experience the whole family friendliness and who provide excellent service. We were given a tour oft he trail and we saw many animals such as sloths and different birds. The breakfast we had was delicious with products produced from the farm. They also provide plenty of information on the activities done in the Tenorio Volcano, costs, maps, etc. l would definitely go back there!
This boutique accommodation was simply lovely! Pip and Donald deserve all their rave reviews for providing comfortable accommodation with spacious bathrooms, personal service, big breakfasts and lots of little extras. I can appreciate all the attention to detail that has gone into providing the level of accommodation at Casitas Tenorio, such as good mattresses and pillows, nice bed linen, spotless and plentiful towels just for starters. The Casita was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and luxurious.Pip and Donald go the extra mile for their guests and offer a degree of personal service which is impressive. Nothing was too much trouble and all executed with big smiles. Casitas Tenorio is a great base for visiting Tenorio National Park where of course the star is the beautiful Rio Celeste. But that’s not the only reason to visit the area —we had great fun at the hanging bridges and indeed on Pip & Donald’s finca! Plan to spend 3 or 4 nights in the area to really enjoy rural Costa Rica at its best and book well ahead to stay at Casitas Tenorio: I’m so glad we managed to!
Casitas Tenorio sits up a winding, flowery lane from an enchanting town at the base of a volcano. There is some agriculture onsite —a group of charming cows that graze the hillside overlooking the volcano —and Pip and Donald have done a majestic job of replanting the rainforest. They have cultivated a fanciful hiking trail filled with pineapple spears, human-dwarfing birds of paradise, and gnarly, giant trees. The cabins are perfect: bathrooms with colorful murals and large skylights. There’s plenty of hot water; towels folded into cute animals on each bed; and fresh flowers everywhere. It felt like we were living in theAvatar forest. The breakfast nook has a large feeder with fruits to attract birds and animals, and in the morning Pip and her mother-in-law will make you a delicious locally-sourced breakfast while, if you wish, telling you about how a young Australian from a small village visited Costa Rica and five years later returned to be with the love of her life and start this beautiful bed and
breakfast. Do not miss the opportunity to stay in this wonderful place with great people. Rio Celeste is just a short, beautiful, ride away, and you will not be sorry you experienced a small utopia and met Pip and Donald.
The entire region where Casitas Tenorio lies is like something out of “Lord of the Rings” with majestic volcanos, wondrous forests, extraordinary brilliantly coloured birds, reptiles and amphibians. Monkeys and sloths hang out in the tree tops and cute marsupials will pass you by with a wink! There are beautiful farmlands with the famous Guancaste trees that shelter the cattle and horses under their “umbrella” canopy. In this magical land Casitas Tenorio is a great place to come to rest for a while; friendly and caring hosts Pip and Donald made us feel at home, the room was comfortable and cosy with plenty of hot water (rare in central America) and hearty food. Experiencing the flora and fauna present, combined with the “working farm” environment was very unique and enjoyable and Donald’s wide knowledge of the region’s nature made it more fascinating. We’ll definitely go back there if we can some time.
There is no words to explain the wonderful experience we had staying in Casitas Tenorio. As you step out of your Casita in the morning, all the magnificence of nature smiles at you. Anthony took precious time to walk us around and show us the wonderful property stopping at all times to answer all our questions. The property is amazing and a nature experience but the warmth of the Tenorio family was what took out hearts. I strongly recommend this place. Give it a try with open hearts and open minds….you will leave renewed.
Loved, loved, loved this place!! We stayed three nights, what a great place! We had toucans right outside our window and monkeys in the trees. Donald is such a nice guy and Pip and the kids are so fun and friendly!! Stay here for more than a night you won’t regret it. It may change the way you travel:)
Casitas Tenorio, a family-owned farm just outside Bijagua de Upala in northern Costa Rica is the ultimate destination if you want to explore the best of Costa Rica on your own terms. Here the friendly hosts offer you a great opportunity to do exactly what you want to do with your stay in Costa Rica. Spend the day hiking to a mystic waterfall in the rainforest and see some of its interesting animals and impressive plants with the very experienced Donald, raised in the area, guiding you to the beauties of the rainforest. Live the life at the farm with Donald and Pip and learn about traditional farming and local culture. A horseback riding tour to Rio Celeste makes the visit to the spectacular waterfall and national park even more amazing.Maybe you just want to spend some time in your private cottage watching the stunning view of Miravalles volcano, the Howler monkey families in the trees at the farm and the hummingbirds visiting the flowers just outside your window. The choice is yours! Pip and Donald, the hosts of Casitas Tenorio, offer the flexibility to experience some of the beauty of Costa Rica on your own terms. Casitas Tenorio is an awesome place and will be my first choice when I come back to Costa Rica!
This was one of the best places we visited in our six week trip in Costa Rica. Not only were the staff great, helpful and attentive, but they also really took very good care of our two year old. She got special meals prepared, she got to help fetch the eggs from the hens (she still talk about that) and she helped to milk the cows one morning and make her own hot chocolate! She never wanted to leave…. Also they have a small trail around the property, which you can also walk at night and admiring the changes. The Casita we rented was spacious, clean, comfortable, with a fridge, a water heater and a nice porch. I will definitely recommend this place and would love to go back.
Far away from crowds, a beautiful farm with beautiful ‘casitas’, a super delicious breakfast every morning, the friendly and helpful Donald and Pip … toucans in the tree in front of our cottage, beautiful flowers, a sloth and monkeys nearby, butterflies and so many beautiful birds. Near the Rio Celeste, not too far from Caño Negro (a must for bird lovers !!), nice restaurants and do not forget to go to the tilapia restaurant on the main road. In short, we have enjoyed a midweek at Casitas Tenorio.
Pip and Donald were great hosts! They have a beautiful property full of diverse plants and wildlife. We saw a sloth and her baby, their new pony that was born the night we got in, tons of birds, and lizards! The lodging was so adorable, clean, and comfortable. Our bathroom had a gorgeous mural on the wall and huge window overlooking luscious plants, giving you that outdoor shower feel. Pip prepared us a delicious breakfast with fresh milk and butter from their property and homemade pineapple jam and bread. Their story is quiet beautiful and environmentally responsible. We are really glad we could stay and support their community.
Absolutely brilliant, we loved our time at Casitas Tenorio. The Casitas are beautiful and well maintained. The home cooked breakfasts were delicious. There are some lovely trials you can take around the farm and grounds, which are inhabited by family’s of Monkeys, Sloths and various wild birds. But the best feature about Casitas Tenorio was the owners Pip and Donald, I don’t think a nicer pair of people exist in the whole of Central America. We were instantly made to feel welcome, they were constantly willing to give their time and advice to make our stay the best it could be. Overall Casitas Tenorio wasn’t just a great place to stay but a fantastic and memorable overall experience and somewhere we would recommend to anyone visiting Costa Rica.
Casitas Tenorio was everything we hoped for and more. It was located in a quaint friendly town just up a dirt road, but well enough removed. It is also the perfect place for anyone making trips to Rio Celeste or Arenal, both of which we did. The rooms are amazing and feel like you’re in a professionally designed treehouse, which is essentially what the they are. Each place has its own unique vibe. Additionally, Pip and Donald were superb hosts and were so friendly and accommodating. Easily 5/5.
Casitas Tenorio is an incredible place. The architecture of our casita was beautiful, functional and top quality. Unlike places you would stay at here in the US. The surroundings are breathtaking. The staff is friendly, accommodating and warm. I can’t say enough great things about this place and our experience. The people of Casitas Tenorio assisted us in our activities, meals and more. They would always point out a wild animal or insect for us to enjoy. The breakfast served there was delicious and filled us up!We didn’t want to leave our gorgeous Casita but there was so much to explore in the area. We visited the Volcano Tenorio National Park and hiked to the Rio Celeste. It was AMAZING. We even saw a sloth on the side of the road! A great experience. We cannot wait to go back!
What an incredibly adorable place to cut our teeth in Costa Rica. My boys 11/12 wanted a beach vacation in Costa Rica. But Costa Rica is soooo much more than that. So I wanted them to have an authentic experience too.Casitas Tenorio was about as authentic as you can get. Our family of 4 stayed in the most darling 2 room casita with a jungle facing shower. Very private and immaculately clean. It was the perfect jump off point to Rio Celeste, which was an incredible hike in and of itself. The reason I selected this particular property was because other reviews had mentioned that they put together soccer games with local kids and our youngest is an avid soccer player and lover. However, once we returned from and hike to when the match was to be played, it was pouring down rain. After waiting 45 min, we thought it might be a loss. However, Donald (the owner) took my son in the pouring rain to the soccer field on property and had two of his teenage helpers play 2 on 2.
We loved our stay at Casitas Tenorio. We had never been to Costa Rica and we opted to skip all the tourist traps and mega resorts for a more local and authentic experience. The owners Pip and Donald are fantastic and so are all their staff. They helped us book tours, answer questions and when we couldn’t find the sloths they took us on a hike on the property where we saw 3 in a row. Special shout out to their Maid service, we never saw them but they cleaned our casita top to bottom every day and it made a big difference. We stayed 4 nights in a two bedroom with 2 kids, and I was worried it would be too long and we actually never got to do everything we wanted, could have easily done a 5th.
I can’t recommend this charming hideaway more!! The Casitas were clean and private, with all you need inside! I recommend taking the farm tour before breakfast! Kids lived so much they did it each morning! And the breakfast was second to none… made with ingredients grown on the farm! Have you ever had fresh butter? Amazing!!! The staff was like family and Donald the owner made all of our breakfasts himself! Great chef!! Book early! In high demand I’ll be back for sure!
We were just here with our family that included 4 adults and 2 kids under 4. It was absolutely breath taking property and we got to see tons of animals and birds. My 3 yo and I got to help milk the cows and meet the animals on this small family farm. The included breakfast was filling and delicious. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you for the amazing stay!!
As one who had traveled many times to Costa Rica in recent years, I tried to locate out-of-the-way places and felt that the Tenorio-Miravalles area would be interesting. The website of Casitas Tenorio B & B showed a beautiful family. The kindness reflected in their faces in that photo was also shown during our visit to Casitas Tenorio. (They even provided a surprise birthday cake for my husband with only about 20-30 minutes notice and their daughters and guests sang to him at the breakfast table!) Pip and Donald, the owners, were friendly and accommodating in every way. They put us in contact with Marlon Calderon Brenes, an expert rain forest guide, and their B & B featured delicious breakfasts, clean and very quiet private casitas, and friendly staff members. Casitas Tenorio is located in the heart of the rainforest, and we were even able to do some high quality birdwatching from the breakfast table. A sloth decided to climb up one of the trees in the small parking lot at the lodge, allowing a world class photo op! Part of the road leading from Bijagua to the lodge is very rocky and rough, but it is short, and once you stay at Casitas you know that it was worth the trip!!
My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Casitas Tenorio for two nights. We were pleased with every aspect of our visit. The cabins are situated so that each one has a private view with a balcony and we could sit out there and watch the hummingbirds and the howler monkeys. The breakfast was excellent and we really enjoyed the tour of the farm. After breakfast, we were invited onto the trails to see a sloth who was descending from a large tree. We would never have spotted him on our own. We especially enjoyed meeting the family who run the farm and the casitas. We felt like we were being welcomed by family friends. We loved being so close to Tenorio National Park and spent a whole day hiking along Rio Celeste which is breathtaking. Don’t hesitate to stay at Casitas Tenorio. It will be a highlight of your trip to Costa Rica.
